In a dramatic turn of events, the High Court has granted an order prohibiting Democracy Hub from proceeding with their planned protest at Revolution Square in front of the Jubilee House from September 21 to 23, 2024.
This decision comes after the Ghana Police Service expressed concerns that the protest could compromise public order, defense, safety, and health.
The police had initially requested Democracy Hub to consider an alternative location for the picketing, but the organizers refused, prompting the police to seek legal action.
According to the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), the police have the authority to assess and regulate public gatherings to ensure public safety and order.
ACP Grace Ansah Akrofi, Director of Police Public Affairs, clarified that the Ghana Police Service hasn’t stopped Democracy Hub’s planned protest. The only issue is the location – Revolution Square in front of the Jubilee House.
According to ACP Akrofi, the police are concerned that the protest could disrupt public order, hence the request to reconsider the location.
In fact, the police have put in place sufficient measures to provide security for the exercise from September 21-23, 2024, once a new location is agreed upon between the organizers and the police.
This assurance is in line with the police service’s history of supporting peaceful protests and providing security for demonstrators.
