National Lottery Authority (NLA) Director General, Sammi Awuku, has disclosed that the government has not enforced the 10% tax on betting, despite its introduction as a policy.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) had previously announced the tax’s implementation, effective August 15, 2023, targeting winnings from sports betting and lotteries.
However, in an unexpected twist, the ruling NPP’s flagbearer and Vice President, Dr Bawumia in one of his campaign promises pledged to scrap the tax, among others, if he wins power in the impending elections.
In an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Awuku contradicted the flagbearer’s intention, emphasizing that the 10% betting tax remains unimplemented.
He noted that the NPP government has not collected any revenue from gamblers.
“The truth and the reality is that we’ve not been able to implement the betting tax policy. As Director General for National Lottery, I’ve not been able to implement it…..
We haven’t been able to collect even a cedi. As I sit here haven’t been able to collect the tax because the framework was difficult. We’re still in discussion with GRA and the Ministry of Finance on the modalities.” Sammi Awuku disclosed this to Kwesi Parker Wilson.
