The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Birim North, in the Eastern region, Hon. Remond Nana Damptey, has bravely spoken out against illegal mining activities, also known as “galamsey,” that pose a threat to the Maman river.
According to him, as a result of his efforts to protect the environment and uphold the law, he has unfortunately received threats from those involved in illegal mining.
The issue of galamsey at Asemkye, Olaikrom, and other areas has been destroying water sources at Maman. Last Monday, I informed you that I would take action on this matter. Despite some miners assuring me that they would stop their operations, I remain committed to addressing this issue.
After our conversation, some chiefs began threatening me, claiming that I had spoken out against galamsey. However, I have discovered that they have sent machines to continue their operations, even deploying security forces to protect their interests,” the DCE disclosed in an interview with Oyerepa News’ Dominic Duut.
He further emphasizes that he is not against mining.
“I want to emphasize that I am not against mining entirely, but it must be done in a responsible and sustainable manner that does not harm our water bodies.
I will continue to fight for this cause, despite the threats and intimidation. I urge the authorities to take action and ensure that mining is done in a way that benefits the community without destroying our environment. I will not be deterred from doing what is right, and I hope that others will join me in this fight,” he asserted.
