Traders at Kumasi Kejetia market are up in arms, accusing the Managing Director of Kumasi City Market, Mr. Duffuor, of illegally selling emergency spaces to some traders at exorbitant prices of GH₵5,000 and GH₵10,000, bypassing the proper procedures.
According to these angry traders, the Managing Director is surreptitiously undermining the market’s operations by illegally collecting money from unauthorized traders who are occupying spaces designated for emergency exits, thereby compromising the market’s safety and generating unnecessary revenue.
Speaking exclusively on Oyerepa Breakfast show with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel Thursday morning, the angry traders alleged that the current managing director for the market is mismanaging the affairs of the market including the unlawful sale of emergency space and pavements for GH 10K each to hawkers resulting in high bills and overcrowding in the market.
However, the traders disclosed attempts by the manager to keep an amount of three hundred thousand cedis (GH¢300,000) that was donated to the victims of last year’s fire outbreak by the Vice President of Ghana.
The traders allege that spaces meant for emergency access and firefighting purposes are now being sold to traders for as high as GH 5K to 10K at the market, blocking emergency exits and endangering the market in case of a fire incident.
“We can’t work with Mr. Duffuor anymore and we want him to leave the market with immediate effect. His actions and decisions are endangering the progress of the market,” they said.
The traders also demand the urgent release of the money in his possession to be distributed to affected traders in the market.
