The Founder of Kunata Voluntary Organisation, Mr Yahaya Alhassan, has made a passionate appeal to the Ghana government to reduce taxes on sanitary pads, making them more affordable and accessible to women and girls.
The high tax rate on these essential products is a significant barrier to menstrual health and hygiene, particularly for low-income families and rural communities.
“Sanitary pads are a necessity, not a luxury, for women and girls. However, the high cost and taxes make them unaffordable for many. I urge the government to consider the social and economic benefits of reducing taxes on sanitary pads,” Mr. Alhassan emphasized.
Mr. Alhassan made the call while speaking at the EID UL ADHA Welfare event organised by Kunata Voluntary Organisation in collaboration with Breast Care International for over 300 Kayayes (head porters) in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Capital.
The event provided free breast cancer screening, sanitary pads, Diapads and food items to the Kayayes, who expressed their gratitude for the support.
The Kayayes also appealed to the government to make sanitary pads more affordable.
