Private legal practitioner with Dominion Chambers, Lawyer William Kusi, has asked Nana Asante Bediatuo to urgently redraw the letter written to parliament and issue an apology to them.
In a statement released on Monday, March 18, 2024, Nana Bediatuo Asante, the Secretary to the President, urged parliament to refrain from transmitting the recently passed Anti-LGBT+ Bill to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent, citing two pending applications before the Supreme Court for an order of interlocutory injunction against the Bill.
Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, host of their Breakfast Morning show, he argued that the president’s secretary has no power to write to the clerk of parliament urging them to refrain from transmitting the recently passed anti-LGBT+ Bill to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent.
“Writing this letter to parliament is below the belt… I was expecting the president to review the bill and provide advice on portions that may be too harsh and need to be revised, rather than trying to prevent the letter from being received at all with an order restraining parliament from transmitting it,” he stated.
However, the private legal practitioner has asked the President’s secretary to redraw the letter written to parliament and issue an unqualified apology to them.
“Asante Bediatuo should redraw this letter and apologize to parliament because restraining parliament from its duty is below the belt,” he stated.
He added that Nana Asante Bediatuo has no right and cannot tell parliament what to do on matters relating to the business of the house.
Meanwhile, Lawyer Kusi called on the President to take a second look at the bill and, if necessary, call for a review of the bill rather than making excuses to avoid receiving the letter at all.
