Dr. Frank Serebour, the President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has emphasized the critical need for significant investment in our health facilities to improve healthcare delivery.
Dr. Serebour highlighted that Ghanaian leaders often seek medical treatment abroad due to the lack of adequate investment in our healthcare systems. This reliance on foreign medical services was underscored by the recent passing of Hon. John Kumah, Deputy Minister for Finance, who tragically died at the Suhum Government Hospital while being transported to Accra for further treatment in Germany, as confirmed by his spokesperson, Bismarck Twumasi.
During an interview on the Oyerepa Breakfast show with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, Dr Serebour emphasized that such outcomes could be avoided if Ghana had a more robust healthcare delivery system in place.
“Even though there has been some improvement in our healthcare systems there are a lot more we can do to help get the better results from our health sector,” he said.
“There are some hospitals you won’t even visit when you have health issues but the environment alone will just put you off because psychologically the environment at our health facilities also plays a key factor “ he stated.
Dr Serebuor argued that it is not as though our leaders have not done anything regarding healthcare in our country here but there is a lot more to be done to help bring improvements in our various health sectors.
“I am not saying they have not anything but I believe there is a lot more to be done for a better health care delivery that’s why are afraid to always seek medical attention here in Ghana ” he added.
He added that John Kumah’s case could have been different if we had the equipment and other facilities to take care of such issues when the need arises.
