Residents of Akyem Sekyere in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region are adamant that they will not tolerate any fraudulent community mining activities in the area.
They have made it clear that they will not allow such activities until their chief, Barima Owusu Takyi, engages the entire community to ensure transparency and accountability.
In an interview with Oyerepa News, the residents expressed their concerns about the chief’s lack of communication with the community since assuming his position. They accused him of using questionable methods to access community resources without being held accountable. This lack of transparency has led the residents to resist any mining initiatives proposed by the chief.
Nana Boakye Yiadom, a youth leader, highlighted the chief’s failure to unite the community and his avoidance of accountability. He emphasized that the residents will not permit any dubious mining activities in the community.
Lawyer Kenneth Agyare, a native of Akim Sekyere and the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for the area supported the community’s stance against the chief’s mining plans. He emphasized the importance of protecting the community’s resources and noted that his success as a lawyer was due to the benefits of cocoa farming in the area. He pledged to stand with the youth and residents in opposing any illegal attempts to exploit or take advantage of the community’s assets.
