Residents of Balansa in the North Municipality of the Upper East region, are threatening to boycott the 2024 general elections if the government fails to fix deplorable roads in the area.
Blaming the Municipal Assembly, Member of Parliament (MP) for the area James Agalga, and successive governments for their inability to fix their poor roads, particularly the road from Balansa through to Nakong, they said economic activities have come to a halt due to the deteriorating state of roads at Balansa and its environs.
Some of the residents who spoke to Oyerepa News’ Edmond Kwaching Agwaazeh said that despite government assurances to repair the inner roads, there has been slow progress in addressing their concerns. They indicated that criminals have taken advantage of the poor road network to attack them.
The Assembly Member for Balansa Electoral Areas, Mr. Listowel Anaab, said that he is very worried because the road has been very problematic for the past 10 years and all efforts by the community leaders to get the road, which he described as trapped, fixed proved futile.
“We have constantly spoken about the road and there has even been a situation where chiefs and community members holding the Assembly and the MP James Agalga to a ransom but to no avail,” he added.
The Assemblyman, on behalf of the community, pleaded with the government to release funds for the contractor to begin works on the road, saying, “If not, the community members will not vote come 2024,” the Assemblyman said.
