Several Civil Society Organizations, including CFF-Ghana, Democratic Credentials Network (DCN), and Coalition of Ghanaians without Ghana Card (CGWGC), have reiterated their objection to the proposed change in the election date by the Electoral Commission. The commission is considering shifting the date from December 7 to November 7.
During a joint press conference held on Tuesday, February 6th in Accra, the CSOs strongly expressed their opposition to the proposed change.
Mr. Richard Kasu, the Executive Director of CFF-Ghana, stated that they do not support any attempt to alter the date of our general election.
He emphasized that the EC’s argument for this proposal is based on the transition of power, which is not within the mandate of the EC.
He urged the EC to focus on its primary responsibility of conducting free and fair elections, leaving the transition of power to the presidency and Parliament.
The organizations also criticized the decision not to use traditional indelible ink, which has been effective in preventing multiple voting in previous elections.
They believe that EC Chair Jane Mensa’s decision to abandon the use of indelible ink is part of the commission’s efforts to destabilise the electoral process.
