Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho Constituency, Akwasi Darko Boateng has said the community mining project launched in his area yesterday is backed by law and not otherwise as some people have said.
“I heard people arguing on the radio saying that the government’s community mining in the district is not backed by law. It is backed by Act 703 of the Minerals and Mining Act.” Akwasi Darko Boateng said.
He continued saying, “Why would a whole Minister come here with his staff at the ministry to support the launching of it if it is not backed by law”.
The MP further noted that his plan for mining in the constituency is to get at least four community mining sites adding that, some people have misinterpreted the purpose of bringing the initiative.
The comment from the minister comes as a response to critics who have said the community mining government is bringing to the area is gallantly in disguise.
The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and MP for Tarkwa Nsuem, Mireku Duker on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, together with officials of the Minerals Commission, as well as Chiefs of the Area, broke the ground for the launch of the government’s Community Mining Module.
He noted that apart from the minerals that would be mined to develop the communities in Bosome Freho, the youth would get employment opportunities.
However, in his address at the event, the Member of Parliament for the area, Akwasi Darko Boateng warned the financiers of the project and all those who will play a part in mining activity not to destroy rivers in the area because they are the main source of water for his people.
