The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Adutwum, has revealed the government’s intention to transform Akrodie STEM Senior High School into a tertiary institution. This move is part of the government’s ongoing efforts, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, to enhance the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Ghana.
During an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast Time on Thursday, November 2, Dr. Adutwum explained that Akrodie STEM SHS, located in the Ahafo Region, was initially established as a secondary school. However, due to persistent requests from the local chiefs and residents of Akrodie, who desired to see the school elevated to a university level, President Akufo-Addo has taken note of their aspirations and is diligently working towards converting the institution into the University of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
“We’ve got a very big STEM school at Akrodie. The people have appealed to the President to turn it into a university which we have accepted. We are going to name it the University of Engineering and Applied Sciences.” Dr Adutwum disclosed.
He explained that the decision reflects the government’s commitment to promoting STEM education and providing opportunities for students to pursue higher education in these fields. By transforming Akrodie STEM SHS into a university, the government aims to create a specialized institution that focuses on engineering and applied sciences, thereby meeting the growing demand for skilled professionals in these areas.
The Minister announced that his office will soon seek approval from Ghana’s Parliament to officially inaugurate the University of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Akrodie.
“Very soon we’ll seek approval from parliament to officially commission the university.” The education minister revealed.
