Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, the Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, says he does not know when the allowances of Ghanaian students in the UK will be paid.
Ghanaian students who are on government scholarships in the United Kingdom (UK) are stranded after the government failed to pay their allowance for nine months. Some have been evicted from their apartments; others depend on food for the homeless to survive; and some female students have allegedly resorted to prostitution to support themselves.
Responding to the situation of the student in the UK on Oyerepa Break Fast time, the Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat admitted that they have not paid allowances for the student for over 5 months and revealed the government is working on it.
“We have an outstanding allowance in the UK; if you look at the upstanding profile, you see that the median is about 5 months outstanding. The Ministry of Finance is aware that we have engaged them. The discussion has been progressive; I am sure very soon we will get some relief and we can go and sort it out.”
“Two weeks ago we had relief from the finance department, and we have used that to settle the tuition fees in the UK because if you don’t pay, that is where the student will be logged out and not get access to the library. The government is fully aware, and we are working on it. He siad.
When questioned about how soon the process would be complete, Dr. Kingsely Agyemang said,
“I am unable to give you specific timelines because this is a request. Like I said, the conversation has been very progressive, and I am sure very soon we will get relief. I can’t promise you anything. He told Kwesi Parker-Wilson, host of the show.
The Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat disclosed that the government will pay the students when they complete their course.
