Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region, is a bustling commercial hub in the country, attracting thousands of people for business purposes. The Central Business District (CBD) is the primary destination for most of these visitors.
However, the CBD areas such as Adum, Kejetia, Central Market, and Roman Hill are plagued with heavy traffic congestion caused by both vehicles and pedestrians.
Tricycle riders, commonly known as “pragiya,” along with other commercial vehicles, contribute to this chaos by loading and unloading without any regard for traffic regulations.
To address this nuisance and alleviate congestion, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced a restriction on ‘pragya’ operations within the CBD.
This measure is part of the Assembly’s comprehensive plan to reorganize the transport system within its jurisdiction and will be implemented starting Monday, July 24, 2023.
Mr. Randy Wilson, the head of transport at KMA, emphasized the importance of compliance with this restriction.
In an interview with Oyerepa News, he stated that anyone who violates this measure will face consequences.
“We have engaged in numerous discussions with tricycle riders, and they are aware that starting today, July 20, 2024, they will no longer be permitted to enter the CBD. We sincerely hope that they will adhere to this directive. However, if they fail to comply, enforcement actions will be taken, and those who defy the restriction will be subject to arrest.” He said.
