Since 2018, award winning Ghanaian musician/ songwriter, Okyeame Kwame has been leading campaigns on climate change.
And this year, the onetime VGMA Artiste of the year, is taking the climate change awareness to Parliament when he, together with the Mayor of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Madam Elizabeth Sackey lead hundreds of school children in a “climate champions walk” to make a presentation to the Parliamentary caucus on Climate tomorrow, July 21.
The march which will start from the head office in AMA from 7:00 am will see the campaigners walk through the streets of Accra to educate and create awareness on climate change.
Already, Okyeame Kwame has started an initiative to raise 2000 climate change champions in various schools as well as tree planting activities in schools to combat climate degradation and encourage students to make climate smart decisions.
Last week Friday, July 14, Okyeame and his team visited Kwabenya Senior High School to educate them about global warming and explain the significance of the climate clock.
The team also visited the Saint John’s Grammar School in Achimota yesterday, July 19 and were at Kaneshie Cluster of Schools with the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawia Sackey earlier today.
Okyeame Kwame told Graphic Showbiz that he intends to visit 100 schools in all 16 regions with the goal of creating climate champions to increase climate consciousness among the youth.
The presentation to the Parliamentary caucus tomorrow, falls in line with the overall aim of getting everyone involved in the Climate change advocacy.
The ongoing activities commemorate with the World Climate Emergency Day, which falls on Saturday, July 22. The day was first celebrated in Ghana last year.
“I am ever ready to drum home the essence of protecting the environment as an ambassador but I need the support of everyone to make it impactful. I’m using this opportunity to call on volunteers to support the campaign,” he stated.
