The Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has cut the sod for the construction of the AMPHI Theatre at the Kumasi Cultural Center in the Ashanti region.
It could be recalled that in 2017, President Akufo-Addo promised to build ultra-modern theaters in the capitals of the Northern, Ashanti, and Western regions.
“We are committed to building multi-purpose theaters in Takoradi, Kumasi, and Tamale.” “It is sad that it has taken this long, but we should make good use of this serious omission in our artistic and cultural infrastructure,” the president said.
But the president, in his first term, could not fulfill his promise.
The government, through the Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, cut the sod on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, for the ultra-modern theater project in Kumasi.
Addressing a sod-cutting ceremony in Kumasi, the sector minister indicated that he had directed them to build five theaters across Ghana.
‘We are here to fulfill the promise we made to Ghanaians that we would build ultra-modern theaters. It’s not Kumasi alone but Tamale, Tarkoradi, Accra and probably Tema. The president has given us the green light to construct five theaters across the country ” The Minister stated.
The minister further assured that the 1,000-capacity Amphitheater will be completed by the end of July 2023.
Mr. Okraku-Mantey urged the industry players to make good use of the facility and adopt a maintenance culture.
The Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Samuel Pyne, who graced the ceremony, also expressed delight and promised that his outfit would pay attention to the project.
“I am happy that we are here today to cut sod for the project in Kumasi, as we promised. It is not the Tourism ministry that will benefit, but all of us in Kumasi will benefit from it. The Amphi theater will boost tourism. KMA will pay much attention to the project; our engineers will be here for inspection until the completion of the project.” The Mayor said.
