President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II has stated that anyone with evidence of Chairman Wontumi engaging in illegal mining should provide it to President Akufo-Addo
It could be recalled that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, ordered the Forestry Commission to stop Akonta Mining Company from operating in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
According to a statement issued by the Public Affairs Ministry on Friday, September 30, 2022, the company owned by the regional chairman of the ruling party, Antwi Boasiako alias Wontumi, has been engaging in mining activities in the forest without a permit.
Many Ghanaians have called for the prosecution of the regional chairman of the ruling party.
As part of the effort to stop the galamsey menace, The President met with the National House of Chiefs and MMDCEs to find a way to deal with the galamsey canker.
Some Ghanaians were disappointed that the chiefs did not discuss Wontumi’s alleged galamsey activities when they met with the President.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson, host of Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II said he has no evidence that the NPP regional Chairman is engaged in galamsey.
“I have heard that Wontumi is doing mining, but I don’t know whether it’s true or not. I don’t have evidence of that, so how can I mention his name at a national forum? If I do that without evidence, he can sue me. So if anyone believes he/she has evidence, they can send it to the president. ” The President of the National House of Chiefs stated.
