The Director for the Eastern Regional National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Kwame Appiah Kodua has revealed five (5) people have died and ten (10) have been missing in the recent flooding menace which occurred in some parts of the country.
Speaking on Nkawkaw-based Agoo FM, he indicated that, the missing persons at Nsawam Adoagyiri cannot be classified dead since no bodies have been retrieved adding that, the rescue team is still on the ground looking for them.
According to him, 17 Districts/Municipalities in the Eastern Region have so far experienced the flood during the rainy season.
He told Obaahemaa Yaa Mirekua that’ four (4) Districts/Municipalities recorded five deaths and they are as follows: Ofoase Ayirebi (1), Akwatia (1), New Juabeng South (1), and New Juabeng North (2).
In Kwahu South District, some farmers have lost millions of Ghana cedis to the flooding during the heavy downpour. One of these farmers is Michael Baah at Kotoso who emerged Eastern Region’s best crop farmer during the 2021 Farmers Day Celebration.
Mr. Michael Baah’s onion farm which cost millions of Ghana Cedis has been destroyed. Kwame Appiah Kubi expressed worry over the lives and property lost in this menace however appealed to the general public to contribute towards sanitation to help reduce such situations.
He also opined that, Galamsey is one major reason why the situation has gotten out of hand. This follows comment made by the Member of Parliament for New Juaben North, Nana Adjei Boateng, who called for a relook of drainage systems in Koforidua, and partly blamed the intense flooding on illegal mining activities upstream.
Flood prone areas
According to Kwame Appiah Kodua, the following Districts/Municipalities are the main flood prone areas in the Eastern Region.
New Juabeng North/South, Birim Central, Nsawam Adoagyiri, and part of Kwahu West
