Corporate Affairs Manager for the Ghana Cocoa Board, Fiifi Boafi has disclosed that it’s worrying that farmers in Ghana are behind the smuggling of fertilizer to Burkina Faso.
According to him, when fertilizer is provided at subsidized prices, these farmers will rather sell them to their colleague farmers in Burkina Faso at exorbitant prices.
What is even worrying according to him, is the fact that these same farmers after selling the fertilizers come back to complain about the low yield of their cocoa just to paint the government in power black.
“When government provides the fertilizer at subsidized prices, they get agents who come to convince them to sell it to the Burkinabe farmers. These farmers will sell them and come back to complain about low yield,” he said on Accra-based OKAY FM.
To him, it’s a shame that farmers who are supposed to reap the benefits of their cocoa farms fall for these schemes which affect them and also affect the country.
He indicated that with the current development, there have been suggestions to halt the provision of subsidized fertilizers for Ghanaian cocoa farmers if they will continue to sell these fertilizers.
