The Youths of Aboabo Akurem in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region have invaded Akurem M/A School park that was supposed to be developed into an astroturf park with shovels, pickax and wheelbarrows to clear the chippings that would be used for the work.
According to the youths of the area, they were told five years ago that the park is being fenced and converted into astroturf and handed over to them to be used but since the day they brought chipping to the field, the project has been left hanging.
They said the park is the only playing field for the youth as well as a recreational centre therefore they are moving the chippings from the field in order to get their park for use.
“We don’t have parks here, this is the only park we have, this is where we play and groom our football players. It has been five years since the park has been left unattended, so we are clearing the chippings to use our park” They indicated.
Meanwhile, speaking to the former Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Alidu Seidu on Oyerepa Breakfast show hosted by Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, he disclosed that he has nothing to do with the construction of the park as an MCE at that time. He leased the land for the construction of the park, and unfortunately, his tenure of office came to an end for somebody to take over.
“It was during my time that the Zongo development authority initiated the project, all I did was to lease the land for the project and I left office for another person to continue, “ He said
However, the current MCE for the area, Kennedy Akwasi Kankam also speaking on the same program told the host that when he assumed office, he chased the documents of the project and realized it was under the Zongo development fund, so he has copies of the documents in his office and will work on it to make sure the park is done.
He, therefore, cautioned the youth who have begun tampering with the chippings which would be used for the construction to leave the site and return the chippings.
“I have chased the documents and I have copies on my desk, we will look through and get the project done for them so they should not temper with the chippings. The fact that the project has not been completed doesn’t warrant them to take the laws into their own hands and move the chippings from the site. If anybody tempers with the chippings, I will have them arrested “ He stated.
