Former Member of Parliament(MP)for Obuasi East Edward Ennin has alleged that the President Akufo-Addo’s appointees in the various Municipal, Metropolitans and District Assemblies(MMDAs) are involved in illegal mining (galamsey).
Albeit Nana Akufo-Addo pledged to put his Presidency on the line in the fight against illegal mining, the fight seems to have failed as water bodies that almost regained their natural state have been polluted again.
Speaking to Accra-based Okay FM in an interview, Edward Ennin said the people appointed by the President in the various Districts in the country are the ones involved in the illegality; something which is very worrying.
“I will be truthful and most Ghanaians will agree with me that about 99.9% DCEs and MCEs at places where there is gold are involved in galamsey. If they think I’m lying they should go to Obuasi and see every site where work is ongoing and they will realize that they do not have the license but galamsey is ongoing. When the police arrest them you’ll see calls from the DCEs. I’ve videos and I’ve given it to those in charge but they are doing nothing about it.”
“I’ve gone round with Soldiers even though I wield no power. I did that because I realized that they want to encroach on the water the mines have provided for consumption for the people of Obuasi. I did some interviews and I realized the DCE’s husband has concessions, the DCE’s special assistant who is a teacher also has four concessions. I’ve complained to Regional Minister and Deputy Lands Minister George Mireku Ducker but nothing has been done about it. I realized I’m just doing a foolish job so I stopped,” he said.
Meanwhile, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will today October 5, 2022 meet with National House of Chiefs and MMDCEs to find lasting solutions to the menace of illegal mining that is destroying the country’s water bodies and forest reserves.
