A 65-year-old woman’s vision was nearly destroyed due to an alleged violent attack by a debt recovery team from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Adade, a suburb of Nyanyano in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.
Recent incidents reveal a disturbing trend of allegations of ECG staff resorting to severe physical violence when disputes arise over metering and debt-related matters.
Over the past two weeks, multiple customers are reported to have fallen victim to assaults during the company’s meter regularization and debt recovery operations in the Awutu Senya East, West, and Gomoa East Districts.
Last week, a medical officer at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital allegedly suffered head injuries when attacked by members of the debt recovery team.
In a shocking parallel event, 65-year-old Akua Esther allegedly faced a brutal assault by more than 20 ECG personnel, resulting in her nearly losing her eyesight.
According to her, the conflict began when ECG staff attempted to enter her premises without permission, leading to a disagreement with her son.
Even though tensions momentarily subsided, some team members attacked her son, who was about to leave home to deliver lobsters to his customers. Her son endured continuous beatings until blood flowed from his mouth.
Auntie Akua herself was not spared from the violence, as the team targeted her. Her ordeal only ended when she fell into a gutter. The victim insists she had not engaged in any illegal connections at her property and is struggling to comprehend the entire ordeal.
Her son, Samuel Yako-hene Dogbe, is demanding a thorough investigation into the matter. The Central Regional Directorate of the Electricity Company of Ghana has initiated investigations into these disturbing assault cases.
