26-year-old arrested over alleged theft of Police Armoured Vehicle

A 26-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to steal an armoured vehicle belonging to the Ghana Police Service in a bold daylight incident at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, identified as Ebenezer Frimpong, was apprehended following a dramatic pursuit by a seven-member SWAT team along the Abuakwa–Kumasi stretch.

According to a police situational report cited by myjoyonline.com, the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

The vehicle, with registration number GP 1131, was being driven by Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) from Nkawie to the Regional Police Workshop in Kumasi for routine servicing.

Police reports indicate that the officer briefly stopped near the Nkawie Market to purchase medication from a nearby pharmacy, leaving the engine running.

Frimpong, who was reportedly passing by at the time, is said to have taken advantage of the situation, jumped into the vehicle, and driven off, leaving the officer and bystanders stunned.

An alert was immediately issued, prompting a rapid response from the Ashanti Regional Police Command. A SWAT team led by Inspector Benjamin Nartey was quickly deployed to track down the suspect.

The chase lasted about 30 minutes before the vehicle was intercepted at Mim, near Abuakwa, where Frimpong was arrested.

The armoured vehicle has been recovered and secured as evidence, while the suspect remains in police custody at the Abuakwa District Command.

He has since been transferred to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department to assist with ongoing investigations.
