Approximately 25 final-year students of Agona Swedru Senior High School (SHS) in the Central Region have been suspended following a violent altercation reportedly triggered by a same-sex relationship proposal.
The incident, which has sparked widespread attention, was confirmed by the school’s headmistress, Mrs. Golda Esi Andam, during an interview with Onua News.
According to school authorities, the incident began when a male student allegedly expressed romantic interest in another male student, who rejected the proposal. The student who turned down the offer later discussed it with some peers, who allegedly encouraged him to feign interest and arrange a meeting.
At the agreed time and location, a group of students believed to be associates of the student who rejected the proposal allegedly ambushed and physically assaulted the other student.
In response, the assaulted student reportedly informed his dormitory mates, prompting a retaliatory attack. The situation escalated quickly, drawing in more students and prompting immediate intervention from school authorities.
Mrs. Andam stated that all students involved were given a fair hearing before disciplinary action was taken.
“These students will write their final exams under the escort of their parents,” she said, adding that the Ghana Education Service takes its code of conduct very seriously.
She clarified that while the suspension is a disciplinary measure, it does not strip the students of their right to education. Instead, it serves as a cautionary example to the rest of the student body.
Mrs. Andam urged all students to strictly follow school rules and regulations to avoid future incidents of this nature.
