A 21-year-old mobile money (MoMo) vendor, Desmond Adzah, has been shot and killed in a suspected armed robbery attack at Quarters Junction, a suburb of Ngleshie Amanfro in the Ga South Municipality.
The tragic incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, as Desmond was returning home after closing his shop for the day. According to a report by Adom News, unidentified assailants ambushed and shot him multiple times. He was rushed to the Ngleshie Amanfro Polyclinic but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
An eyewitness, Ruben Kumor, recounted that he had spoken to Desmond just moments before the shooting.
“Desmond is well-known in this area. Almost everyone here relies on him for their mobile money transactions. I met him shortly after he closed shop and asked to withdraw GHS150, but he said he was short on cash,” Kumor explained. “As I returned to my office to get more money, I suddenly heard gunshots. A woman nearby tried to rush to the scene, but children stopped her. Moments later, someone told me Desmond had been shot.”
Despite the presence of a nearby police station, Kumor expressed concern over the lack of visible police patrols at night.
“There’s a police station just close by, but night patrols are rare. Even assigning community police—what we call the ‘baby police’—to keep watch would help. Desmond was attacked just after work. This shouldn’t happen,” he lamented.
Desmond’s sister, Erica Adzah, suspects her brother was deliberately targeted by individuals familiar to him.
“This wasn’t a random attack. From what we’ve gathered, he was followed, possibly by people he knew. Some even believe his attackers were friends. They shot him and took his bag. But because he may have recognised them, they killed him,” she said.
She added that Desmond attempted to seek refuge at a nearby family home, but relatives were too frightened to step out due to the sound of gunfire.
“This needs serious investigation. Crimes involving motorbikes are becoming far too frequent. It’s time for the government to act decisively to protect innocent lives,” she appealed.
The grieving family and concerned residents are calling on the Ghana Police Service to launch an urgent and thorough investigation into the killing. They are also demanding improved security measures in the area to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
