The government has announced plans to reintroduce road tolls in 2025 as part of efforts to generate revenue for road construction and maintenance.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, while presenting the 2025 Budget Statement in Parliament on March 11, explained that the decision was driven by the negative impact of suspending road tolls in 2022 on infrastructure financing.
He acknowledged that while previous toll collections did not generate substantial revenue, eliminating them entirely further restricted funding for critical road projects.
“To address this, the government will collaborate with stakeholders, including the private sector, to implement a technology-driven solution for the reintroduction of road tolls under the Big Push Programme,” Dr. Forson stated.
He assured the public that the new toll collection system will be efficient, technology-based, and designed to maximize revenue while minimizing inconvenience for road users.
