Freddie Blay, a former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed his belief that the party made a wise decision by placing immense trust in the current vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as their potential presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 elections.
The former chairwoman’s statement comes in response to the outstanding performance of the vice president during the recently-held Super Delegates Conference. Bawumia secured a resounding victory, garnering an impressive 629 votes out of the total 958 votes cast.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Freddie Blay made it explicitly clear that the message conveyed by the party, including during that conference, indicates that Bawumia as the party’s leader increases its prospects significantly for the upcoming general elections.
“It’s not an issue of me wanting, but… I think with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, our chances at the national elections will be far brighter… I am saying this emphatically. From what party members have decided, from what they indicated, I, personally, believe that it is better for the party, and that’s the best decision the party has taken,” he told Kwesi Parker-Wilson, host of the show.
On November 4, 2023, the NPP will convene its last Delegates Conference to choose a candidate who will lead them as their flagbearer and eventually compete in the 2024 parliamentary and presidential elections.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will contest for the spot with four others: Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central; Alan Kyerematen, the former Minister of Trade and Industry; Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the former Minister of Food and Agriculture; and Francis Addai-Nimoh, a former Member of Parliament for Ashanti Mampong.
