The General Secretary aspirant of the NDC, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has insisted that the party won 142 parliamentary seats during the 2020 general elections.
He observed, however, that the party was robbed of victory through the use of intimidation and violence orchestrated by state sponsored security men, including the military.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kwesi Parker-Wilson, he alleged that about 5 constituencies, including “Techiman, Esikado, Zabzugu, Sefwi Wiawso, and Tarkwa,” were forcefully snatched from the party by the government. This, according to Mr. Ankrah, led to the deaths of about 8 people.
Mr. Ankrah made reference to the Techiman collation center when their party members requested transparency in the counting of ballot papers, but gunshots were the response to their request, causing chaos. By the time calm was restored, the results were changed, and the NPP was declared the winner.
In his view, the electoral commission also significantly contributed to the loss of parliamentary seats, and he alleges that the chairperson of the commission, Madam Jean Mensah, altered the forms for ballot counting.
He also added that the Supreme Court judges’ handling of the 2021 election petition was fraught with partisanship, noting that the delivery of the judgment was not based on law. He said that “the court denied the NDC the right to ask the EC, Jean Mensa, some 12 questions they had drafted by saying the court could not force Jean Mensah to stand in the witness box to answer those questions.”
Their problem, he said, was not in the pink sheets but in the declarations of the results. The problem would be solved if they got the chance to question the EC in court.
