The Ministry of Health has announced that 13,500 nurses have been placed on the government payroll as part of measures to improve the welfare of health workers and strengthen the delivery of healthcare across the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, the Ministry said the move aligns with ongoing commitments to enhance service conditions for nurses under the collective bargaining agreement with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
The announcement followed a courtesy call on Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh by GRNMA leadership to reaffirm collaboration with government. During the meeting, the Association rendered an unqualified apology to the Minister over a recent media outburst.
The Ministry outlined several interventions, including the establishment of the Ghana Medical Training Fund (GMTF), retooling of health facilities nationwide, and the full payment of arrears on nursing training allowances and National Health Insurance claims. It also revealed that government has absorbed 50% of admission fees for students in nursing training institutions.
“These initiatives demonstrate government’s commitment to improving the conditions of service for nurses and advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC),” the statement noted.
The Ministry assured stakeholders and the public of its continued dedication to resolving challenges within the health sector and building a resilient healthcare system.
The GRNMA delegation included immediate past President Alice Darkoa Asare-Allotey, current President Dr. Krobea Asante, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and General Secretary Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum.
