The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested thirteen suspects for illegal mining activities at Wassa Gyapa in the Western Region.

The Police Command also successfully disabled over one-hundred and twenty (120) changfang machines during the anti-galamsey operations in the region on May 19, 2025.

The suspects include Nana Ampadu, Stephen Tetteh, Yaw Dalame, Samuel Amoah, Kwame Oppong, Francis Oduom, Owusu Asare, Atta Kwame, Apiyanga Emmanuel, Kojo Montanakito, Maxwell Owusu, Obofo Vincent, and Soogal Fataw.

Six motorbikes were retrieved from the site in addition to over one hundred and twenty (120) Chanfang machines that were disabled.

The suspects will be arraigned before the Tarkwa Circuit Court today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

The Ghana Police Service has launched an intense crackdown on illegal miners with several arrests made in recent months.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command, on May 15 2025, arrested fourteen persons for illegal mining at Akyem Muoso in the Eastern Region.

The accused persons were arraigned before the Koforidua Circuit Court B on May 16, 2025 and each of them was granted bail in the sum of GHC350,000.00 with two sureties, one of whom is to be justified with movable property.

At the time of the arrest, police retrieved a pump action gun from one of the suspects, Zuberu Nuhoho, who failed to produce documentation for the weapon.

Two excavator control boards were also retrieved from the mining site.

This forms part of a broader anti-galamsey operation efforts under the leadership of the current Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno to put a stop to illegal mining in the country.

Government has also taken other steps including the launch of the Blue Water Guards, individual trained to guard the nation’s water bodies to protect the water bodies from galamsey attack or illegal mining.
